Self Portrait of Richard Serrin
There is a psychology of a portrait of
which Serrin is a master. His ability to capture an
excellent likeness, as well as the presence and
character of the sitter, make his portraits distinctive.
When the sitter is unable to devote the eight to ten
hours necessary to paint the portrait from life, his
usual procedure is to paint the portrait from a drawing
requiring requiring three to four hours to complete. This is a time
honored technique dating from the 15th century in both
the Flemish and Italian schools of portraiture. |
